Gervonta Davis – Mario Barrio Generated Over 200,000 Buys On Showtime

Gervonta Davy brought in more than 200,000 for his Showtime PPV bout against Mario Barrios at the State Farm Arena, Atlanta on June 26th.

ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported the numbers. These are good numbers for a fighter in the lower weight classes, but not nearly what Canelo Alvarez would make if he were still on pay-per view.

Gervonta Davis numbers were slightly better than those of Leo Santa Cruz in October’s fight. They’re not great but they’re reasonable considering Gervonta was facing a man few boxing fans have heard of in WBA secondary 140-lb champion Barrios.

Barrios was picked by Mayweather Promotions, but Tank didn’t like them because very few people knew his identity.

This basically placed the responsibility on Tank to bring in all the purchases without any help from the less-known Barrios. It is questionable that Tank was matched against Barrios. This limits Tank’s ability to do what he can.

Crawford is Gervonta a greater PPV draw that Gervonta?

Pay-per-view viewership numbers were comparable to Terence Crawford’s low numbers for his fights against Viktor Postol and Amir Khan. Gervonta could be labeled Crawford as a PPV draw if you want to claim that Crawford is not a draw.

Crawford’s 150,000 Khan buys are very close to Gervonta’s 200,000 Barrios clash buys. Crawford would likely get more than 200,000 buys if he fought Barrios via PPV.

It is possible to argue that Ryan Garcia or Teofimo Lozano are capable of producing better PPV numbers then Tank Davis.

Their promoters have not shown the same willingness as Floyd Mayweather Jr. to throw them on PPV like Tank Davis. Mayweather has put Tank out there in a sort of a ‘If you built it, they’ll come’ kind of way.

Ellerbe says Tank will Fight Anyone

“Tank will fight anyone. Fighthub CEO Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions said that it’s not about going to the ground.

“People fight the biggest fights because he is able to beat all of them, in my opinion, Floyd’s opinion and his. Ellerbe said, “It’s all about us making the fights.”

Ellerbe is clearly exaggerating by claiming that Tank Davis will defeat anyone.

Floyd Mayweather Jr, his promoter, stated after the fight with Barrios that Tank would continue to fight in-house with Mayweather Promotions and PBC.

If Mayweather doesn’t change his mind about Gervonta being trapped fighting mediocre opponents with his in-house bouts, then we won’t see him fight Teofimo or Josh Taylor, Teofimo and Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney. These are just a few examples. Tank won’t have the chance to fight many other fighters.

Gervonta Was Losing To Barrios

“I would have loved to have seen Barrios go through the 12 rounds, but Tank’s devasting power,” stated David Benavidez, former WBC super middleweight champion. He spoke to Little Giant Boxing. “Honestly, Josh Taylor would be my dream fight.

“I believe Josh Taylor would make a great fight, and then unify all titles [at 140].” That would be 140’s best fight.
